INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM
This module examines what GIS encompasses,
why it is important, and describes the trends in software,
hardware, data, and technology solutions.
It discusses the value of incorporating GIS into a variety
of applications and includes a survey of GIS career opportunities.
INTRODUCTION TO ArcGIS DESKTOP
This module introduces participants to the ArcGIS
environment used throughout the GIS certificate programme
and provides the foundation for becoming a successful GIS user.
Participants learn the core applications of ArcGIS (ArcMap, ArcCatalog,
ArcToolbox) and explore how these applications work together to
provide a complete GIS software solution. Fundamental
GIS concepts are covered in the context of a specific GIS
platform including how to create, edit, and georeference spatial data.
Participants learn how to manipulate tabular data, query a GIS database,
and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts.
It also consists of techniques in map design, data manipulation, and geospatial analysis.
INTRODUCTION TO SPATIAL DATA MODEL AND DATABASE
This introduces relational and spatial databases. Emphasis is placed on
understanding GIS data models and applying proper database design
techniques and on creating, using, editing, and managing spatial
and attribute data located in the geodatabase.
It also covers data quality, conversion and metadata management.
INTRODUCTION TO SPATIAL ANALYSIS
The module covers selected fundamental spatial analytical
tools and demonstrates their applications. It introduces data
exploration and descriptive statistics, reclassification,
buffering and distance surfaces, network modeling, surface analysis,
and overlay functions and discussion of spatial analysis modeling.
INTRODUCTION TO MAP DESIGN AND CARTOGRAPHY
This module explores fundamental design concepts and considerations in
map production and presentation. Participants will complete a series
of exercises on developing useful maps for presentations, publication,
and decision support. This module also briefly examines map projections
and coordinate systems to better understand which are appropriate for a
variety of applications.
